Yes — with the right paperwork. Japan accepts only the 1949 Geneva Convention International Driving Permit (IDP), carried together with your home licence and passport. The newer 1968 Vienna Convention IDP issued by many EU countries is not valid in Japan, and IDPs cannot be issued after you arrive — apply in your home country before you fly. Drivers from Switzerland, Germany, France, Belgium, Monaco and Taiwan don't use an IDP at all: instead you need your domestic licence plus an official Japanese translation (issued by JAF, about ¥4,000, same day at a JAF branch). Without the correct document we cannot hand over the keys — no exceptions, so please double-check before booking.

23 or older — and that's the only rule. There is no additional requirement for how many years you've held your licence. It applies to every driver named on the rental agreement.

Yes — you drive this R34 yourself the entire way. You pick the car up at 18:30, roll out at 19:00 behind our guided tour, and follow the lead car all the way to Daikoku PA. You get the night drive without the navigation stress — in our experience, only about one in five overseas drivers manages to find Daikoku on their own.

This particular car is manual only, and Japan drives on the left in right-hand-drive cars — so please book it only if you can confidently drive a stick in city traffic. The R34 seats 4 people including the driver. Everyone rides in the same car — so a group of four works perfectly with one driver and three passengers.

Yes — kids are welcome, as long as everyone fits within the 4 seats including the driver. Child seats are available too: just tell us your child's age when you book and we'll have one ready.

Daikoku Tour Rental (¥70,000): everything — gasoline, highway tolls, unlimited third-party liability insurance and CDW (damage waiver). Show up and drive. Standard Rental (1 Day ¥80,000 / 2 Days ¥105,000): unlimited liability insurance and CDW are included; gasoline and highway tolls are billed separately. We lend you an ETC card free of charge, and tolls are charged at cost.

Yes — the Standard Rental runs on the usual full-to-full rule: the car comes to you with a full tank and comes back with a full tank. If it isn't returned full, the missing fuel is charged at cost plus a ¥5,000 refuelling fee, deducted from your deposit hold. ETC highway tolls are settled the same way — charged at cost from the hold after the rental. None of this applies to the Daikoku Tour Rental, where gasoline and tolls are already included in the price.

You're covered by CDW on every booking of this car, so your costs are capped before you ever turn the key: damage to the car is capped at ¥250,000 no matter how big the repair bill, NOC (Japan's standard non-operation charge) adds ¥100,000–¥250,000 only if the car is damaged, and your absolute worst case is ¥500,000 total. A few things are always billed at actual cost — tyres and wheels (kerb scrapes), underbody, interior damage, lost keys, smoking — and CDW is void if you drink-drive, drift, race, break traffic law at the time of an accident, leave the permitted area, let someone else drive, or fail to report an accident immediately. There's no geofence and no set route — for normal driving on public roads, you're free to plan your own drive: the Bayshore Route, a city loop, a run out of town. The "permitted area" line in the CDW terms is about how the car is used rather than a map boundary — circuits, track days and racing are prohibited wherever they happen. No charge — it's a pre-authorisation hold of ¥250,000 on a credit card in the driver's own name (debit and prepaid cards can't be used), not a payment. Nothing is debited: the hold simply reserves the amount, and only if something happens do we charge the actual costs from it, capped as described above. Return the car safely and the full hold is released — how quickly it disappears from your statement is up to your card issuer, typically a few days. At pickup and return we photograph the car from every angle and both sides sign a condition checklist, so there are no surprise claims afterwards.

Stop safely, call the police, and contact us — immediately, in that order. Immediate reporting to both the police and us is a condition of the damage waiver: as long as you follow it (and the other rules above), your costs stay within the CDW caps.
